Preschool
Missions for Orphans found needs for schooling in 2 different villages in Kenya. We built preschools in Turkwel and West Pokot. At these preschools MFO provides not only an education for the preschool children but also provide meals for them as well. Each school has 50 children who attend. Each child who attends gets porridge as their meal which is made with Beans, Millet, and Maize. This is to give them the best nutrients possible for the needs of the children to ensure not only the growth mentally but also to make sure they are healthy and not malnourished.
At each preschool there is a primary teacher who lives on site in a hut. The teachers for these preschools make $50 a month (USD). The teacher is responsible for building a foundation for these children that includes introducing cultural traditions, as well as language/literacy, science, math, art, sensorial activities, and positive social interactions. For many of these children this might be the only meal they will recieve for the day. Because this is a rural, poverty stricken area, primary and secondary schooling requires school fees. If there is no school available and the families can not afford school fees, this could be the only education that these children may receive.
